Red Belts – Grand Masters of BJJ Documentary
Since Oswaldo Paquetá has passed away early August this year, I started to worry about the history of BJJ being lost with the great people that passed away in the recent years. Carlson Gracie (2006) Hélio Gracie (2009) and more recently Paquetá.
Paquetá witnessed and recorded on video most of all major events in Brazil. With his camera, he watched some of the biggest stars of BJJ in their early beginnings, way before they reached the spotlight. His archive could have been lost in old VHS tapes until Scott Nelson started helping digitize some of his archive.
Visiting BJJHacks the other day I was happy to find out that somebody is preserving the memory of BJJ, thanks Hywel Teague for the idea, I can’t wait to watch it.
“We’re making a documentary film about 9th Degree Red Belt Grand Masters of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.”
“The film will be similar to our past work in that it will be an intimate and revealing look into the art of jiu-jitsu, focussing on a group of men with amazing history in the sport.”
“We’ll be featuring some truly amazing people that are little known outside of Rio de Janeiro: 9th degree red belt grand masters, men who have dedicated decades of their lives to developing the sport and art of jiujitsu.”
“They are teachers and former fighters with over 50 years of grappling experience. While most historical accounts of jiu-jitsu focus on the famous Gracie family, these men were their trusted students. They followed them, fought for them, and helped deliver the message of jiu-jitsu to generations of grapplers, from world champions to part-timers.”
